The last time Cardiff City came to Anfield Liverpool were languishing in Division Two and were about to endure a 4-0 beating on their own turf. It was hardly what you would call a memorable moment. But although no-one knew it at the time, December 19, 1959, would still prove to be a significant date in Liverpool Football Club’s history. For while it may well have ended in a disappointing defeat, in terms of our future dominance of the domestic game, the clash with Cardiff was the landmark occasion that saw 27,291 spectators witness Bill Shankly’s very first match as Reds boss. 48 years on and Liverpool have established themselves as the most successful football club in England and our latest meeting with the Bluebirds is once again tinged with poignancy. It is being billed as the return of one Anfield’s favourite sons in a competition that he made his own during two magnificent spells with the club. Reds legend Robbie Fowler thought he had probably played his last game for Liverpool back in May, when he bade an emotional farewell in our final Premier League match of the season at home to Charlton Athletic. But despite dropping into the Championship to boost Cardiff City’s Premier League dream, a twist of fate has seen Fowler and co drawn to face Liverpool in the fourth round of the Carling Cup in front of his adoring public. While it will be great to welcome Robbie back we must also remember that there’s still a game to be played. Dave Jones’ men are currently just outside the play-off zone and have a number of players capable of helping the Bluebirds cause a cup shock, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Trevor Sinclair and Darren Purse all players with Premier League reputations. For Rafael Benitez it will be another opportunity to give his fringe players a run-out as they look to continue their challenge for trophies on all four fronts. The Reds welcome Arsene Wenger’s young guns to Anfield for what promises to be one of the showdowns of the season. The Gunners have made a sensational start to the league campaign and are proving that there certainly is life after Thierry Henry. In Robin Van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor they have two talented forwards who have taken on the mantle of goalscoring while Cesc Fabragas continues to belie his tender years with some dominant midfield displays. On their day few would argue that Arsenal play the most attractive style of football in the country and with the confidence of their unbeaten start behind them they will take some stopping. Liverpool have suffered a frustrating run of matches at Anfield so far with just two wins from six games and Arsene Wenger’s men will no doubt be our toughest test on home turf to date. Last season Arsenal made a mockery of our fine home form following up a 3-1 FA Cup win with a sensational 6-3 triumph in the Carling Cup just three days later. It was their third win of the season agains Rafa and co following their 3-0 win at the Emirates. But in the fourth and final meeting of the 2006/07 campaign the Reds had the last laugh as a Peter Crouch hat-trick inspired them to a 4-1 home win – a victory that proved crucial in clinching third place in the league. The Reds once again head back to Istanbul hoping to clinch the victory that would reinvigorate their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League Knockout Stages. Rafa Benitez’s men have been imperious in Europe in recent years but they have made a patchy start to their Group A campaign, following up a nervy 1-1 draw in Porto with a disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to Marseille. In Besiktas they face a side who know they need maximum points if they are to maintain any serious aspirations of reaching the knockout phase. Ertugrul Saglam’s men are currently bottom of the standings after their 2-0 defeat in Marseille was followed by a cruel last-gasp loss at home to FC Porto. But with the likes of Ricardinho, Eduardo Cisse and Bobo in their ranks they still have the players capable of causing Pepe Reina and his Liverpool defence problems and they are a match for most teams in the BLK Inonu Stadium. The two sides have never met before but Reds fans have bitter-sweet memories of previous visits to Istanbul with the Ataturk Stadium featuring prominently in recent years. No-one will ever forget the events that transpired on that magical night back in May 2005 while in great contrast, the dead-rubber away to Galatasaray last year ended with a weakened Liverpool side slumping to a narrow 3-2 defeat.
